01

Understand what is being checked

A service might use an authenticator code, a device approval or a security key. These mechanisms are not identical, but each is intended to add a check to the sign-in process. Read the service’s own explanation before enabling a method, including how to replace a lost device.

02

Keep recovery separate

Some services issue recovery codes for use when the usual method is unavailable. Store them somewhere appropriate for sensitive information and separate from a casually shared screenshot or note. Check whether a code is single-use and how to replace the set after it has been used or exposed.

03

Do not approve someone else’s request

A one-time code or approval prompt can authorize a real action. Do not share it with someone claiming to help you sign in, and do not approve a prompt you did not initiate. Investigate unexpected requests through the service’s independently verified account controls rather than a message link.

  • Store recovery codes away from shared photos and notes.
