Addresses and the browser
A browser is the application used to open webpages. A URL is an address such as https://example.com/guide/. The hostname identifies the host in that address, while /guide/ is its path. A subdomain adds another label, as in help.example.com; the complete address still needs careful reading.
Saved resources and sessions
A cache holds reusable copies of resources such as images or style files. A session describes a period or state of interaction recognized by a service, often including signed-in access. Local storage is a browser facility a page can use for saved data, such as this publication’s optional reading list.
Relationships between page versions
A canonical link identifies the preferred original or representative URL for a page. An alternate can identify a corresponding version, including another language when paired with language metadata. These are publishing signals rather than promises about search results. AMP names a constrained webpage format used here for a separate reading view.
A quick checklist
- Use the complete URL when comparing destinations.
- Distinguish local browser storage from a signed-in session.
- Treat canonical and alternate links as page relationships.
